The Cliff’s Edge
Haiku, Maui, Hawaii
Staying here feels like standing at the edge of the world—only less risky and certainly more relaxing. Hidden along a dirt road on Maui’s North Shore, the tropical estate overlooks ethereal views of plunging lava cliffs. Choose between two bed-and-breakfast suites with appealing Hawaiian decor and private lanais, or bask on a private deck at one of two detached guesthouses. The Bali Cottage features teak trim, marble floors and baths, and granite counters. Stay here en route to Hana or to sample Maui’s many other attractions. End your days in the Cliff’s hot tub or hammock staring at the starry night sky and listening to the pounding surf.
My sister and I stayed 3 nights at the Cliffs Edge and were very pleased with everything. From the great map and directions, greeting from Jon, the room, the breakfast, the pool, the grounds, and the VIEW! Couldn’t have been much better!
I am looking forward to my next visit!
HONEYMOON IN MAUI
This place was beautiful, even though while we were staying there a huge low pressure system brought a bunch of rain. Apparently it’s hasn’t rained that many days in a row in years.
Being at cliff’s edge made it not seem like it was raining at all.
It’s a beautiful place and we love the fact it’s right on the edge of a cliff. Very peaceful, and clean! The Innkeeper, Jon was so friendly. He gave us suggestions for places to go, places to eat, etc. And his dog, Lucy was too cute!
We loved this little piece of heaven and we hope to go back for one of our anniversaries.
The Cliff’s Edge is amazing….My husband and I stayed here in October of 2006 for the first part of our honeymoon. From the moment we arrived (yes, the road was narrow, windy, and had potholes…so what?) we were blown away by its beauty. We wanted the absolute best for our honeymoon, and at the Bali Cottage…we got it! Thanks for the memories, and we will be back soon!

FODOR’S REVIEW

Perched on a 300-foot cliff overlooking Waipio Bay, you can sometimes spot turtles swimming below this 2-acre multi-million-dollar estate. The guesthouses are resplendent, with well-equipped kitchens, entertainment systems, and large bathtubs. But it’s the heart-stopping views from the private hot tubs that keep regulars coming back. The Bali cottage is wildly popular, decked out entirely in elegant Balinese imports. In the main house, the Penthouse and King suite each have breathtaking views, private entrances, lanai, and kitchenettes. You’re free to pick fruit and flowers from the lush grounds. You’ll be far from it all out here, in a remote paradise.
The trip up to the Haleakala Crater takes about 3 hours. This means getting up at 2:30 to be at the rim of the crater by 5:00. The drive from Wailea takes you to North Maui, and then up the long winding mountain road of Haleakela national Park. When you get to the crater rim, you see a dim glow of the gathering dawn. The show last for about half an hour. Ultimately, this is the moment everyone waits for… Sun crests the horizon. It’s also the most difficult thing to capture. At 10,000 feet The air is so pure and sun so intense that the dynamic range is pretty much impossible to capture.
